Jaggedsage, Life of a Local, Kiwi Live Streamer
A live streamer from the realm of Twitch, offers some of their casual thoughts and neat insight.
Jaggedsage, who will be referred to as Sage, is a live streamer. He films and creates casual expressive content for viewers to tune into for laughs, friendly vibes and general talks.
He started off for the joy of it, and finding new frontiers. Sage began in 2019 as a simple, explorative content creator, with a small following on Youtube, until eventually reaching outwards and broadening his horizons to a live audience on Twitch.tv.
“My streams were planned with talking points, but then I dropped that for randomness. If there was one or two words I would use to describe my streams, they would be ‘cursed’ and ‘chaotic’”.
“There is variety in the sense that I play whatever I want to. But there is often something I will go back to.”
From his early days, Sage focussed on creating fun, comedic media. He branched out, trying a number of sites like Mixer and D-live, as well as Youtube and familiarised himself with Twitch.
Initially, Sage’s content was on and off for the first few years. As of March 2022, Sage has been consistently active on Twitch, going live every Saturday and any free time he has on holidays. Most streams vary in length and category, mostly relating to spending time with his community in 3-4 hour intervals, starting around 7:30pm New Zealand standard time.
You could think of these casual sessions as sitting around a virtual campfire. Relaxing while having the listening community and Sage express their thoughts through video game play or listening to music.
Sage balances and manages his live-streaming hobby as a lone wolf; having the setup, public representation, showmanship and resources for a sustained adventure.
Twitch is a platform with its own societal rules, known as terms of service enforced by moderators, administrators and users together. It’s an entire pocket universe, much like how other social media and large websites are (e.g. Facebook, Reddit and Youtube). Sage, as a light in the ever-expansive miasma of content creation has to play along.
“Streaming can be hard, because it has its ups and downs. You need a lot of determination and perseverance. So you have to keep going and make sure to have fun.”
Sage is both an alias for the person behind the live stream, as well as the persona for the audience.. Sage keeps his personal life private, while Sage, the character and icon, carries the persona of the channel, like a performer on a stage.
“My character is cheerful and energetic, with a side of goofy,” Sage explains.
In livestreams his talk is chipper and positive. He reacts accordingly like a caring person. Inquisitive and observant. Always willing to listen.
Never down.
To Sage, the reward of this hobby, is being able to interact directly with a global audience. It’s not about earning donations or becoming a rising star-influencer, it’s about having a good time, and being able to share that positive energy with others even if they have had a bad day.
“It’s hard to measure success, – everyone has their own version of what success is or what a highlight is. Sometimes you have people who are very generous,” Sage says.
“I sit there and do it as a hobby but when someone says ‘hey, you’re doing a good job. Here’s something to keep you going’ – stuff like that’s pretty nice.”
“I say it’s a hobby, and I hope one day It could help sustain me. I just want to have a good time. Right now, it’s a hobby.”
