The Kentish Hotel: The Beating Heart of Waiuku

Located in the centre of Waiuku is The Kentish Hotel, labelled as “New Zealand’s Oldest Licensed Pub”. This establishment was built in 1851 by Edward Constable, who emigrated from the county of Kent in England, which is where the name “The Kentish” came from.

The Kentish has stayed as the heart of Waiuku for many years and has grown alongside the town. Despite having multiple changes of ownership throughout its lifetime, the Kentish remains a place for locals or even out-of-towners to embrace its atmosphere. But Waiuku has more to offer, with the gorgeous black sand beach Karioitahi, only a measly 10-minute drive away.

Inside the pub you will see over 450 historic photos along the wall

This rich hotel is somewhere that you can spend time dining in for food and a drink, or simply book a room in their hotel and settle down for the night. They also hold events from time to time, whether that be a gig or even a wedding.

“Whether you’re passing through and enjoying the buzz of our lively bar or staying overnight or a weekend in one of our 10 original historic rooms, you’ll be in for a real taste of kiwi heritage.”

As previously mentioned, many events are held here. These may include hosting pay-per-view watchalongs, DJ sets and quiz nights, and I even found some clips of salsa classes being held. These elements inside the pub contribute to the great time this establishment has to offer.

The Kentish Hotel has a little bit of class for everyone, coming with a bar and a beautiful restaurant. Alongside having entertainment like darts, a pool table, and a show of non-stop sports on the teles.

Ethan Bennett, an example of a visitor to the hotel enjoying the pub.

Duane Windelburn is a Waiuku local who is born and bred in the town, having lived there the majority of his life. “Being a smaller town, having a beautiful building like this with all its heritage means a lot to the people of Waiuku” he said.

Duane is someone who like many, has adopted the culture that comes with the Kentish and has many amazing memories from the intriguing building.

When asked how often he goes along to the hotel, Duane said “We try get over there as much as we can, for catch ups, birthdays, anything. It’s a good place to get together.” That is exactly what the Kentish is all about, bringing people together. Community.

No matter the person, or the circumstance, the Kentish will always provide a good home for you.
