Life of a FIFA Volunteer in Waikato

Wintec journalism student Ronella Felizardo was among the huge team of volunteers who made the experience of seeing women’s world cup football in Hamilton more enjoyable. She recounts her experience.

Being a FIFA volunteer has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life.

Hearing the cheers of people from different parts of the world and seeing women playing in what used to be a male-only sport feels surreal and inspiring.

Before becoming a volunteer, I had to fill out an online application for a group interview with the volunteer managers. Thankfully, I passed the interview and I was placed in the Media and Broadcast Operations, where my journey as a FIFA volunteer started.

I had to do some online specific training where other volunteers and I were briefed on what to and what not to do as a volunteer in our specific placements.

After the online training, we went to the Waikato Stadium for our venue specific training. We were given a tour of the stadium then a brief of what to do at the FIFA Media Hub.

My first day was at the opening game in Hamilton between Japan and Zambia. It was nerve wracking because of the overwhelming amount of media and people coming, but as time went by it became a fun experience.

The most memorable time for me as a volunteer came during the match between Argentina and Sweden. The Argentinian fans were really passionate, especially with the drums banging and the songs they sang to cheer on the players. It was incredible.

Also, as a Wintec student journalist, it was interesting to be in the media centre and seeing the dedication and passion of the journalists.
