Youth Vote students go on “What’s Your Why” podcast

As part of their Suffrage 130 campaign and Youth Vote 2023 initiative, Wintec – Te Pūkenga School of Media Arts students Sarah Morcom, Tori Post, Mikayla Baker, and Paige Hare went on the “What’s Your Why” podcast with host Julia Roughton.

The “What’s Your Why” podcast has been a staple of the YWCA for a few years, however, was only taken over by Roughton about 6 months ago, with an average of around 250 listeners each show. The shows are usually run once per month and are available on Spotify, but the goal this year is to have 100 shows.

Roughton, who is also one of the heads of the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) and has been with the organisation for over 2 years, invited the women on the podcast as it aligned with the YWCA’s goal of: Impowering young women and amplify their voice.

“It’s always interesting to hear from different people’s perspectives, I remember one of the guests said she loved cleaning on the weekends, which I thought was different, but I get it, I don’t mind cleaning but it’s not something I love to do”.

One of the guests Tori Post, who had her first experience being interviewed on such platform was nervous before the start, but felt more relaxed as soon as the questions started rolling in.

“I was a bundle of nerves before we began, however Julia was really nice and made it easier to answer questions once the podcast had got started.”

Post has some handy advice to anyone going on a podcast in the future.

“Just make sure that you don’t ramble for too long, stay on the subject topic and if that fails…. then just remember the host can always edit stuff out later”.

The Suffrage 130 campaign keeps going all the way up to election day, with the goal to inspire new voters or people who haven’t voted in previous elections, to get out there and make their voice heard.
