Orientation kicks off the new semester at Wintec

Wintec launched its Semester Two Orientation this week with events held at the city campus on Tuesday and at the Rotokauri campus on Wednesday.

Orientation is aimed at helping new learners connect with important services, and have some fun before the semester gets fully underway.

The city campus orientation was held in The Hub with a steady stream of students checking out the activities. Students could take part in games, speak with support service staff and collect stamps on an orientation passport to go into the draw to win an air fryer.

The twice-yearly initiative is part of Wintec’s wider effort to ensure students feel supported, informed and welcomed from day one.

Hayley Thompson, Residential Services Manager for the Wintec Accommodation, says it’s a way to welcome students and also inform students of the support services Wintec has on offer.

“We want to encourage those support networks and pointing people in the right direction”, she said.

“It’s important to show these services early on, as students are still fresh and we just want to relieve that anxiety and putting faces to the services we provide.”

From wellbeing and counselling to academic support, Orientation Week showcases a wide range of services available to answer any questions and provide a warm welcome, including doughnuts and hot chocolate.

“It’s all about making things familiar for them and making them feel welcome ”

And it wasn’t just new students taking part, second-year nursing student Ethan Grindle came along to see what else Wintec had to offer. “I’m just keen to check out all the services that Wintec offers, see if there’s anything that interests me, and a free doughnut is always good”, he said.
