What makes the Lido ‘primo’?
By Paul J Michael

A feeling of relaxation comes over you when entering the Lido Cinema; What is it about this place that gives the cinema goer a more authentic experience?
The Lido Cinema opened in December 2009 replacing the Rialto and was refurbished as a boutique three screen cinema venue. Located in Centre Place Mall, it’s operated by a small team and currently managed by Nigel Corboy.
Entering from the light into the dark majesty of the theatre you enter a place of mystery and luxury. There’s a feeling of elegance, from the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, to the comfortable black leather chairs and carpet in Prussian blue and gold.
The music in the foyer adds to the ambience with an eclectic combination of classical, Flying Nun, 1980s new wave and modern alternative country.
Buying tickets or refreshments is a routine experience for most, at the Lido this is enhanced with options like; a glass of sauvignon blanc, a barista made coffee or a fancy snack such as a boysenberry ice cream.

Inside the theatres have large, comfortable chairs in leather or cloth; and have an armrest with cup holders for patron’s ease and pleasure. This makes the cinema experience a better one; being able to watch a movie, while enjoying a sip of wine or coffee.
Richard Dalton, the previous owner, is behind the overall theme of quality. This is also reflected in the program of movies and events that the theatre specializes in throughout the year such as the French and NZ International Film Festivals, and a focus on arthouse and independent films – https://www.lidohamilton.com/
The Hamilton Film Society gather here on Monday evenings to view, then discuss films https://www.nzfilmsociety.org.nz/hamilton.html

Corboy recently introduced Q & A evenings where people involved in the making of the films are interviewed in an open session afterwards. This has become very popular with patrons.
“Our demographic is generally female, 38 plus when it comes to film programming; we take that in mind, but we want quality films as well – I’m a film buff”.
Nigel Corboy
Having a strong community focus is important to Nigel, “I love to help different community groups, schools, churches, choirs, all that sort of thing”.
If people are looking for authenticity these days, this is what the Lido offers; a quality venue that shows quality films, a special place for fans of cinema.
So, bring your worries down to the Lido; grab a wine or coffee and relax;
Lights, camera, action…
