From medicine to music, Auckland GP preps for new EP release
Doctor and body-builder, Jordan Hunter Hyland, has turned his songwriting hobby into reality, writing, performing music for his debut EP.
He released the title track ‘Waste’ as a single in August, with the 7-track EP coming in September.
Hunter Hyland, who works in general practice, said songwriting was initially just a hobby, but he’s hoping it turns into more.
As well as writing and performing guitar, drums and bass, Hyland also produced the EP, which he describes as “very analog-sounding” and hard to place into any sort of musical genre, “it sounds almost unfinished in a way”.
Hyland said he has explored a few different sorts of sounds on the EP out, “so it’s not all the same sort of quiet stuff”,
He had his young daughter playing the piano in one of the tracks, and said the main inspiration for the album was “to show my daughter that you don’t have to just stick to one path, that you can actually just follow what to do in terms of your passion, and you don’t have to just do what’s safe”.
Hyland said the most meaningful track for him is ‘See You Around’, “that one was just about family stuff”.
Having written songs up until he went to University, Hyland says he’s definitely a musical person and that songwriting is what he does instead of going home and watching TV.
He thinks performing and actually getting stuff out there is completely different to what he’s used to when it’s his own music.
Hyland will be taking the band live and already has some musicians all set to go. He says he’s at the point where he’s actually happy with the music he writes. ”The last couple of years I decided to give it another go now that I’m a bit older.”
Waste’s lead single of the same name was out Friday 14, August.
