Wintec students “funraise” for kids in need
Communications students from Wintec got together to host a “Funraiser” supporting children with serious health issues and their whanau in the Waikato area.
The first year students raised over $400 dollars as part of a class marketing and events project, aimed at supporting children’s health trust True Colours.
The funds came from selling baked goods on the Wintec city campus, and the array of cookies, muffins, cinnamon roles and cakes were mostly gobbled up in the first hour of the event.
In front of the bake stall, students were running a photo booth, corn hole and ring toss games which made for some lively competition, while another group offered free portrait sketches. A lolly jar competition was also on well-supported.
The event was themed around a carnival or fair, which was suggested by the communications student Taylor Wilson.
The event was an opportunity for students to get practical experience with planning similar events and working with clients as part of their intro to digital marketing and events.
“Our goal as comms students is to do that background research into what the client has done in the past, to come up with something fresh and interesting, or bring back something that’s worked previously,” Wilson said.
The marketing of the event was also a big focus for the class, who were posting promotional videos on social media every other day leading up to the day.
Wilson said events like these aren’t just to raise money, but also to spread awareness about the organisation, as they rely on visibility to attract sponsors.
True Colours provides counselling services, creative therapy, liaison with medical professionals, and advocacy for children with serious health conditions and their families. They are entirely funded through sponsors and donors, whose support allows them to offer their services for free. True Colours has helped support over 2000 families throughout the Waikato region since their inception in 2004.
