An “Immersive” after dark festival, combining music, performance and imaginative lighting is set to transform TreeChurch & Gardens in  Ōhaupō.

D-Light Festival is taking place on October 17 and will see visitors explore four creative zones in the gardens, with a range of different live performances, interactive lighting displays and visual effects.

The event is presented by The Production Co. and Dr Jeremy Mayall, in partnership with the team at Tree Church and Gardens. Mayall, who is CEO of Creative Waikato, as well as a composer and performing artist, said the idea for the festival emerged from conversations with his friend Paul van’t Hof (Goff) who is the founder of The Production Co. Together they explored ways to combine music and light together in an “unusual way”.

Mayall said he’s been working on the concept of a multidisciplinary experience that brings music, performance, and singer-songwriters into the garden setting at night for a while.

“With lights all around to create this otherworldly experience”.

Performers include Mayall and Taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instrument) practitioner  Horomona Horo. String quartet Kulios will perform beneath an illuminated parachute canopy, singer-songwriter Nathan King will perform an acoustic set, and ‘The Labyrinth’ will perform spoken-word poetry.

Mayall said visitors can expect to experience “something quite unique” over the course of the night, spending about twenty five minutes in each performance area.

He described the venue as beautiful and magical in the daytime, and at night “with lights and lasers and all kinds of other things going on, it will just become something quite memorable, a very unique experience”.

With “a bunch of bite sized interactions”, D-Light festival has a special destination feel, and is a chance to try something new.

Food and drink will also be available for purchase on the night.

D-Light festival takes place at Tree Church and Gardens in Ōhaupō, on October 17.
