Hamilton driver gets among Ford and Holden in Toyota V8 Gold Star Series drive

Hamiltonian Martin Short will be one of the first to race the V8 powered Toyota Camry being built by Richards Team Motorsport for the V8 Gold Star series.

A new generation of race cars will make an appearance this year in New Zealand’s leading V8 racing series.

Hamiltonian Martin Short will be one of the first to race the V8 powered Toyota Camry being built by Richards Team Motorsport for the V8 Gold Star series.

The new breed of car will use a 5.0-litre engine developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) for the Grand-Am endurance racing in America.

Short will join Ford and Holden competitors on the grid for the 2012-13 series, marking the first time Toyota has entered any V8 series in Australasia.

Short said he was excited to be back in the championship with a competitive drive.

“I think Richards Team Motorsport will be a championship contender with this brand new Toyota Camry V8. The TRD engine we are using will be a great package and very impressive,” he said.

Richards Team Motorsport is to enter two cars in the 2012-13 New Zealand V8 Gold Star championship season with one other driver yet to be announced.

The build of the first Camry has begun and the first engine is on its way to New Zealand for Richards Team Motorsport to install in the car for the upcoming season.

While the engines have been approved for the series by officials, Richards Team Motorsport still have to ensure they meet similar outputs to that of Ford or Holden engines.

Nissan are also to provide a V8 competitor as part of the Car of the Future programme.

Kelly Racing team will be using a Nissan and will enter four teams in the V8 Supercars Championship starting from 2013.
