Waikato dog owners braved high winds last weekend to explore an iconic art trail usually closed to pets

Fine art, family dogs, and Duck Island ice cream combined in Tauwhare last weekend as pet owners braved high winds for the monthly Dog Days event at the Waitakaruru arboretum sculpture park.  

Running on the last Sunday of every month, the event opens up the 17.5-hectare former quarry for canine exploration.

Leo Reid has been working at the arboretum kiosk since late last June and said the idea behind the event is to attract a wider range of people who own dogs. He feels exposing dogs to new environments is beneficial to them and their enrichment.

Reid said that the event is spread via word of mouth amongst dog owners and it’s a good way for people to meet each other’s dogs, “it’s just good, fun vibes”.

To keep the paths clean and comfortable for all visitors, including those who may be nervous around dogs, owners are required to keep their dogs on a leash and bring their own dog waste bags.

The event is based heavily on trust with visitors to the park strongly advised to stick to the main trails to ensure personal safety and protect the artwork, most of which are off the main trails. .

To encourage native wildlife to return, Dog Days takes place just one day a month. This ensures a proper balance between hosting dogs and restoring the local environment.

The cafe will soon introduce dog snacks to entice both repeat and first-time visitors to bring their pets to the ongoing event.

Entry is $20 for adults and $5 for children, with dogs and under-fives free. Reid said all proceeds directly support the park’s massive operational costs.
